What is Alphabet Knowledge and Why is Alphabet Knowledge Important?
What is Alphabet Knowledge?
Alphabet Knowledge is the ability to name, distinguish shapes, write, and identify the sounds of the alphabet

(Mason, 1984)

Many children develop alphabet knowledge through a common sequence of activities.

  1. Recite the alphabet

Studies have shown that preschoolers learn to recite the alphabet very early on, and one of the best ways they learn this is through the traditional Alphabet Song.

  2. Learn letter names
  3. Identify the letter shapes that match the letter names

As soon as children begin alphabet instruction, children can learn to print the individual letters. This will reinforce letter recognition and writing words.

  4. Identify letter sounds

As children gain a solid foundation of letter names, letter sounds are introduced.
