The ExcELS Mathematics and Science Partnership project provided professional learning for 80 teachers, grades K-8 across 6 member districts. These teachers participated in professional learning communities (PLC) to engage in inquiry-based, student-centered learning opportunities using an integrated Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) framework that would positively impact student achievement.

A collaborative effort among Florida’s three rural educational consortia (Heartland Educational Consortium – HEC, North East Florida Educational Consortium – NEFEC, and Panhandle Area Educational Consortium – PAEC). Ensuring students in Florida’s small and rural school districts have access to challenging STEM educational opportunities in a manner comparable and equitable to the access afforded students in larger, urban districts continues to be the project’s overarching goal. During this initiative, the average number of students enrolled in rigorous STEM courses increased by 12.71 percent, and project participants and their families were afforded almost 24,000 project-provided “STEMming” opportunities.
