Clearing a Paper Jam
When a paper jam occurs, the Paper Jam indicator on the printer's display panel will light. Frequent jams in any area indicate that the area should be checked and repaired or cleaned.
Clear paper jam as follows:
1. Open the printer top section and locate the jammed paper. Be careful, the area around the transfer guide and roller will be hot.
2. Open the transfer guide paper lock and remove any paper.
3. Pull out any paper stuck under the transfer guide.
4. If the paper is stuck in the toner fuser, carefully pull the paper out. The paper will be hot and the toner may still be powdery.
No Ready Light
After warming up, if the Ready indicator is not lit, two problems may exist. If you are downloading additional typefaces, too many can overload the printer's memory and this will cause the printer to reset. If this is not your case, you may have a laser or engine failure and you should place a service call.
No Start-Up Page
If the Ready indicator is on, but no start-up page prints, turn off the printer and check the following:
1. From a cold start, it takes a minute for the printer to warm up. Be sure you have waited long enough for a start-up page before suspecting a problem.
2. Check to be sure the paper tray is in place and not ajar.
3. Open the top section of the printer and check for a paper jam.
4. Make sure a toner cartridge is installed.
5. If none of the above problems are found, call your dealer. Before calling, open the printer and lift the green fixing assembly cover in the front.
6. Hold your hand just close enough to tell whether the rollers are hot. Have this information ready when you place a service call.
Printer Resets
1. If you change the communications switch setting, the printer will reset itself. If you are in the Diablo emulation mode (communications switch setting 2 or 5), the printer will reset when incoming data flow stops. (See the chapter Diablo 630 Emulation for more information) Be sure this is not the case. Also, remember to always begin at 0 when setting the communications switch.
2. Occasionally, software packages will interfere with each other. Macintosh applications have a header file sent to the printer at the beginning of each document. This file alters the state of the printer. Other header files cannot be sent without resetting the printer. Monitor your activities to see if there is a correlation between your use of a certain software package and the printer resetting. If so, contact the software package developer.
3. If you are downloading additional typefaces, too many can overload the printer's memory and this will cause the printer to reset.
4. If the printer resets in other circumstances, you should call your dealer for service.
Blank Pages
1. If the start-up page ejects, but is blank, or blank pages are output from the printer during a printing job, check the toner cartridge. Blank pages will print if your toner is out.
2. Be sure you have broken the tab on the side of the toner cartridge and removed the sealing tape.
3. If the toner cartridge is not empty and the sealing tape has been removed, and blank pages are being ejected, take the toner cartridge out and roll it from side to side. This procedure is described in Installation
Not All Pages Are Printed
1. Check your cable. See the chapters in this manual on connecting and testing with either a Mac or an IBM PC. You could have the wrong kind of cable.
2. If you have an IBM PC/compatible and are using a serial cable, you may have a protocol conflict (flow control). If you are using XON/XOFF, try the DTR protocol. See More About Printer/PC Communication to change the flow control.
Unclear Printout
See the section "Print Quality Problems" at the end of this chapter.
Active Indicator Continues to Blink
The Active indicator single blinks when the printer is processing a job, clearing information, or warming up. The Active indicator double blinks while awaiting data. When printing, the indicator blinks to let you know that the printer is working. Some jobs take longer than others, particularly graphics or text with demanding font and font-size changes. Be patient and wait for the job output.
If you have waited more than ten minutes, or the Active indicator continues to flash long after you have finished printing, turn off your printer and turn it back on.
Printer Does Not Print
1. Check the Ready indicator. If the light is on, try sending your file to the printer again, and if the Active indicator does not blink, check the communications setting. You may have an incorrect setting. See the chapter entitled Using Your Printer particularly the section "Setting the Communications Switch."
2. If your communications switch setting is correct, there may be a problem with the connection of devices. Review the chapters entitled Connect and Test to be sure you have properly connected to the printer. You must have the right kind of cable: null modem serial or parallel for IBM PC or compatible users, and AppleTalk for Macintosh users. These cables can be ordered from your dealer.
IBM PC/Compatible Users - Check the following:
Does your software set-up match the settings that appear on the lower-half of the start-up page?
Have you set up your printer port on the system level (DOS) and installed a PostScript driver with your application program? (See DOS and software documentation).
RS-232C Serial users may have a protocol conflict. Set the printer to DTR protocol. If that doesn't work, try XON/XOFF. See More About Printer/PC Communication. Check the manual that came with your software program to ascertain whether the program is PostScript compatible.
For users of the RS-232C serial port, from the DOS screen, type the mode commands to activate the serial port. Place the communications switch on setting 2 and try a simple Print Screen. This will tell you if your serial port, cable, and the printer are working.
If you get a printout, then your applications program is configured incorrectly-. Make sure you have installed the correct printer driver and have told the software what port you will be using.
MAC Users - Check the following:
Are the printer and computer properly connected?
Is the communications switch set to 3?
Are LaserWriter and LaserPrep files installed in your system folder?
Is the printer turned on?
Have you selected LaserWriter in the Chooser and is AppleTalk active?
Paper Jam Indicator Stays On
If the Paper Jam indicator lights, open the printer and clear the jam. See the previous section, "Clearing a Paper Jam" for more information.
General Print Quality Problems
Print quality problems are problems with the appearance of the pages you have printed. Print quality problems include white lines on the page, uneven blacks, and other similar problems.
If you are having problems with the quality of your printed pages, try the following procedure.
A Quick Check
Check the print density dial on the inside of the printer. Change the setting and try printing another page.
If the Toner indicator is lit, replace the toner cartridge.
Check the cleaning stick. The white felt should be fairly clean. See Taking Care of Your Printer.
Remove the toner cartridge and rotate it several times. The toner can settle and this procedure will redistribute the toner. Insert the cartridge and try printing again.
Place a service call. See the end of this chapter.
Specific Print Quality Problems
Listed below are several print quality problems with possible solutions. Try the solutions in the sequence given. If the solutions listed do not solve the problem, place a service call.
White or Light Lines
1. Remove the toner cartridge and rotate it as you do before installing a new cartridge. This redistributes the toner inside the cartridge.
2. Install a new toner cartridge.
Light Image (entire page)
1. Increase the print density by using the print density adjustment dial inside the printer.
2. Remove the toner cartridge and rotate it as you would when installing a new cartridge. This redistributes the toner inside the cartridge.
Dark Image (entire page)
1. Decrease the print density by turning the print density dial inside the printer to a higher number.
2. Remove the toner cartridge and rotate it as you would when installing a new cartridge. This redistributes the toner inside the cartridge.
3. Install a new toner cartridge.
Blank Print
1. Increase the print density by turning the print density dial inside the printer to a lower number.
2. Remove the toner cartridge and rotate it as you do before installing a new cartridge. This redistributes the toner inside the cartridge.
3. Place a service call (see the end of this chapter).
Black Image (entire page)
1. Remove the toner cartridge and rotate it as you would when installing a new cartridge. This redistributes the toner inside the cartridge.
2. Install a new toner cartridge.
Stain Along Right Edge of Page
1. Install a new toner cartridge.
Stains On Back of Page
1. Clean the corona wire and the underside of the toner cartridge.
2. Inspect the cleaning stick and replace it if it is dirty.
Dark Vertical Lines
1. Inspect the cleaning stick. If it is dirty, replace it.
2. Install a new toner cartridge.
Sharp Horizontal Black Lines (across feed direction)
1. Place a service call.
Blurred Horizontal Stripes
1. Remove the toner cartridge and rotate it as you do before installing a new cartridge. This redistributes the toner inside the cartridge.
2. Install a new toner cartridge.
Blurred Vertical Stripes
1. Clean the primary corona wire.
2. Install a new toner cartridge.
White Horizontal Shapes on a Black Print
1. Replace the paper in the printer with dry paper.
The interfaces are located
on the back of the printer, near the base.
The Communications Switch
The communications switch is used to select the mode of operation in which the printer will operate. This switch is located on the back of the printer just to the left of the ports where your computer is attached.
Note: only one cable may be connected to your printer at any one time. If you have several computers, be sure and disconnect the cable from the computer not in use before connecting the cable for another computer. Connecting two cables may cause the printer to operate incorrectly as well as affecting other attached devices.
