Purpose of the course and expected participation outcomes:
The purpose of this introductory course is to provide participants with a foundational understanding of the components of reading and to provide a foundation for further studies in the instruction of reading for all students. Participants are expected to have a working knowledge of both the components of reading as well as the language acquisition process.

Course Description:
Participants will develop an understanding of reading as a process of student engagement in both fluent decoding of words and construction of meaning. This 10-week online professional learning course will provide substantive knowledge of language structure and function, as well as cognition for each of the five major components of the reading process. Educators will learn about the importance of leadership and advocacy in reading education by developing activities to engage stakeholders in their communities which all relates to the C of C Teaching and Learning Standards and the conceptual framework of making the teaching and learning connection.
