The Reading Endorsement Competency 4: Foundations and Applications of Differentiated Instruction course will provide teachers and administrators with knowledge and skills to identify the needs of students with differing profiles and use this knowledge for instructional decision making to meet the needs of all students. Participants will gain an understanding of how to prescribe, differentiate instruction, and utilize appropriate strategies and materials from scientifically-based reading research in order to address prevention, identification, and remediation. This 60-hour online training meets the requirements for Competency 4 of the Reading Endorsement Add-on Certification Program.

Participants must successfully complete 2 of the first 3 competencies to register for this course.

This is a self-paced, facilitated course. The course is completely online and requires no face-to-face meetings or specific dates/times required to be online. This cohort (Spring 2023 Cohort) begins January 2, 2023 and will end on July 31, 2023. Login information and directions for accessing the course is sent by 4:30 PM on Mondays and Fridays after the course start date.

The average time to complete a 60 hour course is 10 weeks but the course is self-paced so you can choose to finish quicker than the 10 weeks or can choose to take a little longer if needed as long as the coursework is finished by the course ending date.

NEFEC's courses are for inservice points and are not college level courses. The Florida Department of Education will not accept NEFEC's courses if they are submitted by an individual for recertification or endorsement. They must be submitted through a district as part of its approved Professional Learning Catalogue. Participants are responsible for following their district’s requirements to obtain inservice credit and endorsement. If you are unsure if your district will accept courses offered through NEFEC, you will need to check with your district Staffing Development office.

FDOE Note Regarding Endorsements: Per section 1012.575, F.S., school districts, charter school consortiums, and private school organizations with state-approved professional learning systems have statutory authority to provide state-approved add-on endorsement programs to educators. Private school teachers may take the "endorsement" courses offered by NEFEC, however these courses cannot be used to add the endorsement to a certificate; additionally, educators will only receive inservice points if the courses are part of the private school organization's professional learning catalogue. In order to receive credit for endorsement purposes, private school teachers must either complete a private school organization's state-approved endorsement program OR receive the appropriate credit from a college or university. Regardless of which path an educator chooses to take, it is recommended that they apply for the endorsement BEFORE taking any courses. Questions regarding endorsements for private school teachers may be directed to LaRhonda Johnson at LaRhonda.Johnson1@fldoe.org.

Forty (40) hours of the Competency 4 course may also be used to satisfy the effective methods of identifying characteristics of conditions such as dyslexia, and a focus on multisensory interventions requirement as required under Rule 6A-4.0051, F.A.C.
