Hamilton County transitions from keys to badges

HAMILTON CO., Ga. (WCTV) -- Hamilton County High School is ditching traditional keys for something much more high tech.
"Due to all the shootings and things that have occurred throughout education recently, safety and security is paramount in all the school facilities," says Thomas Moffses, Superintendent of Hamilton County Schools.
The school district now uses a software program called the Scholarchip.
The $100,000 investment is a badge system used to keep students in and others out.
"Although the overall driving factor is ultimately safety and security, we had to find a program that had the integration for the accountability components," says Moffses.
The Superintendent says keeping track of hundreds of students wasn't easy until now.
It scans each student, even when they arrive at lunch and depart on the bus.
They say the software not only cuts time, but costs.
Many improvements are still underway in Hamilton County, including their new elementary school, which will be 95% keyless.
"They're not used to seeing a small and rural county step up and go after student's safety and security," adds Moffses.
He says the system shows their rural community isn't so small after all.
The project should be wrapped up by next August.
That includes new software in the high school and elementary school.
